UCheck / A comparison between SUMo and UCheck

With the announcement of KC Softwares SUMo End-Of-Life (EOL), we observed a large influx of new users testing UCheck as a replacement.
Even if they have similar features, they do not work the same way, leading to users frustration. This post is here to help clarify things.

How UCheck detect software that needs to be updated VS SUMo

UCheck and SUMo list the software installed on your system along with their version number and query an external database.
The difference is our database is filled using editors websites and changelogs. SUMo's one rely on users data; if more than a certain percentage of the version number reported do not match yours, an update notification is triggered.

Pros

• Faster update notifications
• Better handling of software with low users count and software that release BETA versions to the general public
• Support of System updates using Windows Update Agent API (WUA)

Cons

• Less supported applications
• Adding a new application requires manual intervention
• If an editor doesn't publish version number, the application can't be added to our database

How UCheck install software that needs to be updated

Upon user request, the official installer is downloaded from the editor server and run in Silent mode, meaning no user-interaction. This is necessary for UCheck CLI to be usable and for the Bulk update feature.
This stated, some installers don't repect the "silent" instruction, meaning these specific applications can not be supported by UCheck.

We are conscient this choice is controversial over SUMo's users, but this feature was implemented years ago and is here to stay.


Why UCheck supportable application ("Portable Apps") is so poor at the moment

For the past few years, we strived to make UCheck a competitive application in the world of "Software Updater". Back in the days, no existing products were able to be run from the command-line; we decided to fill this gap.
We were informed less than a month ago of KC Softwares owner to EOL SUMo. At this time, there was no existing code to support "portable apps" at all.

We are making progress, but it's going to take a long time.


Miscellaneous

• UCheck will detect both 32-bit and 64-bit of the same application
• UCheck will update an application to its latest version, without consideration for the operating system requirements or for paid license tied to a specific version of the application

RogueKiller / ==> Known issues and How to fix them <==

Hi,

This topic concerns known issues of RogueKiller.
So please look at this issues before asking regarding a new bug.

Here is the list of somme common recurring issue that we have yet to fix and how you can mitigate them on your end.

1. When instaling, the message "Stack overflow" is displayed and the installer becomes irresponsive

• If RogueKiller is already installed, please uninstall it
• Make sure that the "hidden" folders are visible and remove the following folder : C:\ProgramData\RogueKiller
• Download RogueKiller latest installer using this link and save it on your desktop
• Try to install it again

2. When starting your computer, your browser open automatically on a "Thank you" page or a "How do you want to open this?" prompt widget may open

• Uninstall RogueKiller
• Make sure that the "hidden" folders are visible and remove the following folder : C:\ProgramData\RogueKiller
• Download RogueKiller latest installer using this link and save it on your desktop.
• Install it again

3. Your version of RogueKiller Premium don't recognize your license as valid and display the message "Expired: please renew"

• Make sure you are using RogueKiller latest version by comparing the string in the menu bar to the Changelog
• If it's outdated, download RogueKiller latest installer using this link, save it on your desktop and install it.
• Go to the "Account" tab, then click the "Remove" button. Register it again using your most recent license key.

If you are facing one of these issues and following the instructions didn't help, please open a support ticket.

Please make sure to include the following information :

• The version of Windows running on your computer (for exemple Windows 10 64-bit, version 20H1)
• A list of the potential others antivirus/antimalware you are running alongside RogueKiller
• Did something strange happened before the issue appeared ? If so, please mention it.

UCheck (x86) - EN

UCHECK is a tool that will automatically detect available updates and offer to download and install them without the hassle of doing all of that manually.

• Download UCheck (x86) and save it on your desktop.
  
• Exit all running applications.
• Double-click on UCheck.exe to launch the tool. On its first execution, UCheck will disply the software license (EULA), click on "Accept" to continue.
• Click "Start" to begin the analysis. This may take some time.
• Once the scan is complete, click the "UPDATES" button to display the list of softwares that need to be updated.
• Click on the "Select/Deselect all" checkbox and then hit "Update Selected" button to launch the bulk update process.
• Sofware that are conflicting with the bulk update feature (flagged with an exclamation mark) must be manually updated using the corresponding "Download" and "Install" buttons.

Note : A "Premium" version of the tool is available, but the free version provides everything you need to update your applications.
Note : In case you want to install the software for good, use UCheck Installer.

RogueKiller is a powerful tool. So, it is preferable that a helper checks the scan results to avoid potential false positives even if if the tool is equipped with a quarantine.

• Download RogueKiller (x86) and save it on your desktop.
  
• Exit all running applications.
• Double-click on RogueKiller.exe to launch the tool. On its first execution, RogueKiller will disply the software license (EULA), click on "Accept" to continue.
• If RogueKiller is unable to load,  do not hesitate to try launching it several times or rename it winlogon.
• Click "Start Scan" to begin the analysis. This may take some time.
• Once the scan is complete, click the "Open TXT" button to display the scan report.
• Copy/Paste it's content in your next reply.

Hello,

RogueKiller 11 is now released as stable
No big change in the flow, nor in the UI.
The most important occurs while Antirootkit scan => SSDT, Shadow SSDT, IRPs, Filters. IAT scan isn't affected.

What's new?

• Rewritten all kernel code. From scratch.
• Kernel Hooks detections are now made on userland side, in common with IAT hooks detection. Easier to maintain, more efficient.
• Minified amount of code on Kernel side for safier code.
• Driver is now aware of Windows 8/8.1/10.

Hello,

RogueKiller 11 is right behind the door
We need you to test it before it replaces the official version (currently 10.X.X).

It's quite critical because the only major change is about the Kernel Driver. We have re-coded all the driver from scratch, following best practices to ensure it's compatible with all operating systems (from Windows XP to Windows 10, 32 and 64 bits) and with all environments.

Why is it critical? Because a bug in the Kernel Driver means Blue Screen Of Death, which is not particularly a good thing. Yeah, that's annoying.
So we need as much tests as possible to ensure no bug is left before it's moved in production.
