Hi mrhappy1525,

Thanls for your feedback and welcome to Adlice.com Forum.
A new version of UCheck was just released. Can you please try it and check if the issue is still present ?

Regards.

Hi Curson:

The problem persists in UCheck v5.1.0.0.

I currently have the latest official / stable build for 64-bit MS Edge v120.0.2210.89 (released 20-Dec-2023) that is listed in the release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-relnote-stable-channel, but UCheck v5.1.0.0 is recommending an update to the 32-bit MS Edge BETA v121.0.2277.4 (released 15-Dec-2023) that is listed in the BETA release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-relnote-beta-channel.

Hi lmacri,

Thanks for your feedback.
Do you think you can report this on UCheck bug tracker ?

Regards.

Hi Curson:

User mkvGuy already reported this bug at https://github.com/AdliceSoftware/UCheck/issues/11/.  Tigzy's reply a few weeks ago at https://github.com/AdliceSoftware/UCheck/issues/11#issuecomment-1840448591 was "For Edge, it will be fixed once we fully support it. Leaving open for now."

However, I don't see how MS Edge will ever be a "fully supported" Compatible app when this browser is built in to the Win 10 / Win 11 OS (at least here in North America).  Users would not normally use UCheck to install, update or uninstall this program (when SUMo reported MS Edge was outdated I would manually update from within the browser at Help and Feedback | About Microsoft Edge) so I assume that MS Edge will always be classified as a Community app in future versions of UCheck.

Hi lmacri / Curson

Thanks both for following up on my original post.

I would just say, Microsoft Edge updates are not tied to monthly support updates via Windows Update.

They are release as needed and Microsoft make it difficult to find under the ... > Help and Feedback > About Microsoft Edge page.

Having UCheck report the correct version would be very helpful to all the users of the software, thinking you have out of date software, when you have the latest release version.

Look forward to the issue logged on GitHub getting some attention.

Another related question is Microsoft Edge a 32 or 64 bit app?
It's being flagged as a 32 bit app, I would have expected it to be a 64 bit app.

So two questions I guess, 32 or 64 bit and version number.

Hi lmacri, mrhappy1525,

Sorry about that.
I didn't notice the issue request.

You are right.
To be blunt, I think it will stay a "community" application for quite some time. Without a download working link, we can't support it fully.

I think it should be a 64-bit process. Would you agree to run some test to confirm this ?

Hi Curson:

No problem.  Post back with instructions if you need anything.

Just note that I currently have the latest MS Edge v120.0.2210.91 (rel. 21-Dec-2023) per the release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-relnote-stable-channel, and when I do a check for updates at edge://settings/help it says I have "Version 120.0.2210.91 (Official build) (64-bit)" (image A).

However, if I go to Task Manager, right-click on any instance of msedge.exe while this browser is open and choose Open File Location (image B), this opens C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\ (image C).

It seems UCheck relies on the installation location, which is not reliable. Because you can have 64-bit-programs installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\ and 32-bit in C:\Program Files\ and vice versa. Even the Registry isn't that reliable, identifying 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Like Imacri, I've a 64-bit Windows 10 with a 64-bit Edge installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\ but UCheck thinks it's 32-bit, but it's definitely running as a 64-bit process. The same goes for the Edge WebView2 Runtime. See screenshot.

As it turns out, Google Chrome does this too. The 64-bit Google Chrome is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\ and UCheck recognizes it as 32-bit. All 3 programs also have their uninstallation key located in the 32-bit part of the Registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\).

Here is a snippet of the scan log:

Hi lmacri, 00Eraser00,

This is indeed probably a bug with the parser, but I'd still like to check this.
Is the dumpbin.exe utility installed on your system ?

Regards.

Hi Curson,

What is the expected location of dumpbin.exe?

I've searched C:\Windows, C:\Programs Files, C:\Program Files (x86) and the hidden C:\ProgramData folder, and I can't find a file called dumpbin.exe.  Typing dumpbin /? in an elevated command prompt says 'dumpbin' is not recognized.  A Google search suggests dumpbin.exe is a Microsoft Visual Studio file and I don't have Visual Studio installed on my Win 10 machine.

Unfortunately, I haven't got Visual Studio installed and dreading installing it, can you tell me what information you're looking for? Would this Wrapper GUI http://www.benf.org/other/wumpbin/index.html for an older version of dumpbin enough to get you this information?

I've got a toolbox of other tools though, maybe one of them would be helpful.
