Please ignore my previous 11-Apr-2024 post <above>.  As of today UCheck v5.4.0.0-BETA2 is once again erroneously recommending that I update to a Preview build (Version 2404 / Build 17531.20004, released 08-Apr-2024)...

A  bit of good news.

I'm now using UCheck v5.4.0.0-BETA3 (rel. 15-Apr-2024) and as of today (16-Apr-2024) UCheck is once again correctly recommending I update my MS Office 2019 C2R from Version 2403 / Build 17425.20146 (rel. 29-Mar-2024) to Version 2403 / Build 17425.20176 (rel. 09-Apr-2024), which is the latest stable build listed in the Current Channel release history at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-2019#retail-versions-of-office-2016-c2r-and-office-2019.

However, this has happened before for brief periods (see my 11-Apr-2024 reply # 2 above for one example) so I'm not entirely convinced the problem is now permanently fixed.  I'll have to wait for the release of a few more Preview builds before I'm sure that future UCheck scans will only recommend "stable" Current Channel updates for MS Office 2019 C2R.

Scan and debug logs are attached.

Has this issue been fixed?

UCheck v5.4.0.0-BETA2 correctly suggested I update my MS Office 2019 C2R from Version 2403 / Build 17425.20146 (rel. 29-Mar-2024) to Version 2403 / Build 17425.20176 (rel. 09-Apr-2024) today, which is the latest stable build listed in the Current Channel release history at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-2019#retail-versions-of-office-2016-c2r-and-office-2019.

I've been running UCheck daily for the past few weeks and UCheck has not detected any of the Version 2404 Insider Preview builds released since 01-Apr-2024 that are listed in the Current Channel (Preview) release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-current-channel-preview.

I am currently using the latest stable release of HWinFO Portable v7.72.5355 (released 05-Feb-2024; see release notes at https://www.hwinfo.com/version-history/) that I run from a removable USB stick.

As of 09-Mar-2024, the latest UCheck Free Portable v5.3.1.0 is incorrectly recommending I update to the HWinFO Portable v7.73.5380 BETA, which is the BETA version currently offered at https://www.hwinfo.com/download/....

Never mind.  After waiting 3 weeks for Adlice to address this erroneous detection of BETA releases of HWiNFO Portable, the problem has corrected itself.

A new STABLE version of HWiNFO Portable v8.00.5400 was released on 27-Mar-2024 (see release notes at https://www.hwinfo.com/version-history/). I only noticed this because the v8.00 update was correctly detected today by QuickInstaller as shown in the attached image.

I have the latest stable release of MS Office 2009 C2R Version 2402 / Build 17328.20184 (rel. 12-Mar-2024, see the Current Channel release history <here>) and the latest UCheck v5.3.1.0 is incorrectly advising that I update to Insider Preview Version 2403 / Build 17425.20058 (rel. 13-Mar-2024, see the Preview release history <here>)...

Just an FYI that UCheck v5.3.1 is still advising I update to an Insider Preview build of MS Office 2019 C2R , but is now recommending Version 2403 / Build 17425.20070 (rel. 18-Mar-2024).  See the Preview release history at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-current-channel-preview.

The attached image also shows that UCheck v5.3.1 is still recommending an update to a BETA version of HWiNFO Portable.

Just an aside, but the HWiNFO Portable update recommended in the attached image is also an erroneous detection of a BETA version - see my 09-Mar-2024 topic UCheck v5.3.1 Incorrectly Recommends Update to HWiNFO Portable v7.73 BETA.

The good news is that the QuickInstaller (Preview) v0.3.8830.19890 software I began testing in Nov 2023 has not recommended any BETA versions for my HWiNFO Portable app so far and is still detecting HWiNFO Portable v7.72 as the latest stable version (see the attached image I captured today).
__________________________

I should add that detection of BETA versions of HWiNFO were a problem with SUMo before it reached end of life as well, but the problem was quickly resolved as soon as the erroneous detection was reported in the SUMo forum. See my 29-Dec-2023 comments about erroneous detections with SUMo vs UCheck in post # 1307 on page 59 of the Wilders Security topic UCheck - Update your software in 2 clicks.

The installed version of HWiNFO is classified by UCheck as a fully supported "Compatible" app, which means that version updates are detected by automated bots that crawl the software developer's website.  However, HWiNFO Portable is classified as a "Community" app, which means that telemetry data collected from the wider UCheck community is used to determine when a newer version of HWiNFO Portable is the "prevalent" version being used.  It's always possible that there are an unusually high % of HWiNFO Portable users who test the BETA releases, which in turn causes UCheck's automated algorithm to incorrectly flag the BETA release as the "prevalent" for HWiNFO Portable.

Whatever the actual cause for these constant erroneous detections of HWiNFO Portable BETAs, if the algorithm used for "Community" apps to find the "prevalent" version can't be improved then there at least needs to be some sort of standard mechanism put in place so that a BETA detection can be corrected in a reasonable amount of time once it is reported to Adlice.

Addtionally, the change log for UCheck 5.3.1 is not posted as of 1800 PDT on  Sun 10 Mar 2024 - see attached screenshot.

Hi dking02:

A bit off-topic, but this must have been a temporary glitch on the Adlice website.  I'm fairly certain the latest v5.3.1.0 change log was posted at https://www.adlice.com/docs/ucheck/release-notes/changelog/ when I checked on 08-Mar-2024, and I just browsed there again and can still see that change log (see attached image).

UCheck / UCheck v5.3.1 Bug - New Text in Filter Button Truncated
« on: March 08, 2024, 05:01:40 PM »
I am using UCheck Free Portable v5.3.1.0 (released 08-Mar-2024) on a laptop with a 15.6" screen.

According to the change log for v5.3.1.0 at https://www.adlice.com/docs/ucheck/release-notes/changelog/ one of the changes made in the latest version is "Added filtered count in filter button (installed / updates tabs)".

The text on that filter button is now truncated (see attached image) unless I maximize the size of the UCheck interface so that it fills my entire screen .

I'm not sure why adding this extra text to the filter button was even necessary when the Installed tab already shows the number of hidden programs (e.g., Portable - Showing "24/28").  The UCheck interface is already cluttered with unnecessary information (e.g. like the total amount of disk space used by my Installed and Portable programs on the Installed tab) and search links (e.g., for outdated Community apps on the Updates tab) and I feel the interface would actually be improved if it were simplified.

EDIT:

A bug report has now been filed on GitHub at https://github.com/AdliceSoftware/UCheck/issues/39.

UCheck / Re: Microsoft Edge (32-bit), version 120.0.2210.77
« on: March 07, 2024, 02:53:02 PM »
... Is this still an issue with UCheck 5.3.0 ?

Hi @Tigzy:

If you are asking if Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime are still reported as 32-bit applications then the answer is Yes.The good news is that UCheck is only recommending updates for stable releases of my Edge browser (i.e., UCheck is not recommending unwanted Insider Preview or other BETA builds).

I'm currently using 64-bit UCheck Free Portable v5.3.0.0 on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 machine.

An image of the Installed tab of my UCheck interface plus scan and debug logs for today (07-Mar-2024) are attached.

Just note that I didn't receive an automated email notification yesterday that this thread had been updated, so I'm not sure if other users subscribed to this thread have read your latest post yet.

...I re-created my custom settings and it appears that those settings are now stored in a new subfolder called \UCheck (see attached images).

Hi @Curson:

Further to the questions I asked in my original 17-Feb-2024 post, can Adlice provide guidance to UCheck Portable v5.3.x users on how to clean up the remnants of previous UCheck Portable versions?

If they don't want to tell us what orphaned remnants of older versions of UCheck Portable v5.2.x and earlier we can safely remove, could they at least tell us if there are any registry or folders (e.g., C:\Program Data\UCheck) that we must keep to ensure that UCheck Portable v5.3.x runs correctly?

Phrased another way, the first time I ran UCheck Free Portable v5.3.0 from the E:\Portable\UCheck 5_3_0 folder of my removable USB stick it created a new subfolder at E:\Portable\UCheck 5_3_0\UCheck as shown in the attached images.  Is this \UCheck subfolder now the only location where custom configuration settings, debug logs, etc. are now stored for UCheck Portable v5.3.x?

If I want to run UCheck Portable v5.3.x or higher from a different folder do I have to copy and paste the entire \UCheck subfolder into the new location of my UCheck_portable64.exe executable in order to preserve my custom configuration settings?

UCheck / Questions RE: UCheck Portable v5.3.0.0 (rel. 16-Feb-2024)
« on: February 17, 2024, 02:33:25 AM »
The change log at https://www.adlice.com/docs/ucheck/release-notes/changelog/ for the latest UCheck v5.3.0 (rel. 16-Feb-2024) states in part:

Quote
     - Consolidated Tech portable available features
     - Added "fully portable" feature, if not installed will work from a current dir's subdir

After updating to UCheck Free Portable v5.3.0.0 (located on a removable USB stick at E:\Portable\Ucheck 5_3_0) I discovered that all my custom settings had disappeared, including the path where my portable apps are located (History & Settings | Custom Locations) as well as my program exclusions (History & Settings | Exclusions). I re-created my custom settings and it appears that those settings are now stored in a new subfolder called \UCheck (see attached images).

Question 1: Will the Portable builds of UCheck v5.3.0.0 and higher run correctly if I manually delete the hard drive files (C:\Program Data\UCheck) and registry entries (e.g., Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adlice Software\UCheck and Computer\HKEY_USERS\<my user ID>\SOFTWARE\Adlice Software\UCheck) created by previous Portable and BETA builds of UCheck?

Question 2:  If my UCheck Portable executable (UCheck_portable64.exe) is moved to a different folder on my USB stick do I have to copy and paste the entire contents of the E:\Portable\UCheck 5_3_0\UCheck subfolder to that new location in order to retain my configuration settings and exclusions?

UCheck / Re: Microsoft Edge (32-bit), version 120.0.2210.77
« on: January 12, 2024, 01:40:17 AM »
... We will change the way these are detected in UCheck next release.

Hi Curson:

I updated to the latest UCheck Free Portable 64-Bit v5.2.2.0 (released 09-Jan-2024) and can confirm that UCheck is no longer incorrectly recommending BETA / Preview updates for my MS Edge (Stable Release Channel) browser.

My main concern now is that I have the latest MS Edge v120.0.2210.133 (released 11-Jan-2024, see release history at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-relnote-stable-channel) but UCheck currently reports that the LATEST version is the older v120.0.2210.121 (released 05-Jan-2024).  Unfortunately, it's not unusual for VERSION to be greater than LATEST for many of my fully "Compatible" applications, and I assume this is because the automated bots that scan documentation on the web looking for new releases of "Compatible" programs can be very slow finding this information.

UCheck v5.2.2 still detects my 64-bit MS Edge browser as a 32-bit application (see attached image, scan log and debug log) but I personally am not overly concerned about this since I would never use UCheck to install / update / uninstall my MS Edge browser.  I use Firefox as my default browser and if UCheck eventually reports that MS Edge requires an update I will trigger the update manually in MS Edge at Help and Feedback | About Microsoft Edge.  Here's an excerpt from my latest UCheck scan log:

Microsoft Edge (32 bits), version 120.0.2210.133
          Uninstall           : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft Edge

... Is the dumpbin.exe utility installed on your system ?

Hi Curson,

What is the expected location of dumpbin.exe?

I've searched C:\Windows, C:\Programs Files, C:\Program Files (x86) and the hidden C:\ProgramData folder, and I can't find a file called dumpbin.exe.  Typing dumpbin /? in an elevated command prompt says 'dumpbin' is not recognized.  A Google search suggests dumpbin.exe is a Microsoft Visual Studio file and I don't have Visual Studio installed on my Win 10 machine.
