UCheck is confusing XnView MP with XnView
« on: October 14, 2023, 02:03:54 AM »
UCheck is currently confusing updates of the older Windows-only XnView program (aka XnView Classic) with updates of the newer multi-platform XnView MP program. XnView and XnView MP are different programs and updates to one program are not compatible with the other.

I have XnView MP 1.6.0.0, 12 Oct 2023 installed on my Windows 11 desktop machine. It is the latest version of XnView MP.

UCheck is identifying an update of XnView MP from 1.6.0.0 to 2.51.5 (3 Oct 2023) - see attached screenshots and report excerpt. v2.51.5 is the current version of XnView, not XnView MP. XnView is currently on the UCheck compatible program list and XnView MP is not.

XnView MP uodates should be handled separately from XnView. Either XnView MP should be (1) added a separate program to the compatible programs list and handled as a supported program or (2) continue to be left off the list but handled as a community program. Option (1) is preferred.

Hi dking02,

Thanks for your feedback.

We will create a separate entry. However, something is bothering me. Both entries in the Uninstall list target the C:\Program Files\XnViewMP directory.
Could you please check if XnView "classic" is installed to a separate directory ? If not, there may be trouble when updating.

Regards.

I noticed the two entries for XnView MP in the uninstall data in the report and on the Installed tab, one for XnView MP 1.6.0.0 and the other for XnViewMP 1.5.5.0. It did not affect running 1.6.0.0 so I ignored it. I have subsequently fixed the double entries after noticing your reply to another user about deleting such entries from the registry and figuring out what had happened in this particular case.

When the update for 1.6.0.0 was run, it did not prompt to delete the previous version when installing the update to the same XnViewMP folder in Program Files. After the installation, XnView MP 1.6.0.0 was running properly but since the 1.5.5.0 uninstall program had not been run, its entry remained in the registry and some remnants may have been left behind in the program folder. There was actually only one xnviewmp.exe file in the program folder and that was the one for 1.6.0.0. I uninstalled both versions via Programs & Features and then reinstalled 1.6.0.0 This cleared the old entry for 1.5.5.0 from the registry and left only one version showing in Programs & Features. The installer for a program update should explicitly call for permission to uninstall the previous version when reusing the same folder to install the new version. Most users do not need to be preserving the old version.

The problem with double entries is not related to the problem with UCheck's handling of XnView vs XnView MP. That problem remained after the above fix. Attached is an revised version of the UCheck report excerpt.

I can confirm that the problem has been fixed. I had posted a message in the Wilder's forum after this problem occurred a second time when the XnViewMP 1.6.1 update was released.

XnView is being handled as a compatible program and XnView MP as a commcunity program and UCheck is no longer confusing the two. The multi-platofrm XnView MP is the designated successor to the legacy Windows-only XnView but both programs are currently being used and maintained. The current split between the two programs in the SUMo DB is about 130 users each out of a total SUMo user base of around 2000.

Thanks.

It is interesting to note that Patch My PC has also recently encountered a problem with XnView and XnView MP. When I scanned my machine, it indicated that an update to XnView MP was available in the right panel but selected XnView for download (red X in left panel) and did not recognize that XnView MP was even installed (not in green font in left panel). The problem was initially reported by other users on the PMPC Forum on 14 Oct but there has been no response from PMPC support, only from other users.

Hi dking02,

Editors usually provide version information in their respective Uninstall Registry key.
Some does not and prefer to write it directly in the FileVersion or ProductVersion PE fields or other.

Quote from: OldNavyGuy
That worked...until the version number was no longer included in the DisplayName key.
That's bad practice and should only be used as a least ressort.

Regards.
