I noticed that when I am updating Calibre that the download size always shows as 340 KB, but the download takes VERY long time for 340 KB. I checked an old Calibre installer file (3.44.0) and it was 62,576 KB, which would explain the long download times on my slow, rural Internet speed.
Have a great day.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your feedback.
It seems the issue is also affecting other software. We will investigate it as soon as possible.
Have a nice week.

Curzon:
Thank you for your fast reply. It could be affecting other software and I would not have noticed, but with the Calibre updates being so large, this was noticeable to me. The first time it happened, I just ignored it and figured it might have been a glitch at my end (slow Internet), but when it happened again, I thought that I should report it, after having eliminated my ultra slow rural Internet speeds as the issue.
Happy hunting and have a great day.

Hi Phil,
We identified the issue and a fix is not currently possible.
At the time being, the size matches the one displayed by the Add/Remove Programs control panel. However, when a software installer is not writing itself its size (using the EstimatedSize Registry value), Windows has to "guess" it and it's not quite efficient; see How does Add/Remove Programs get the size and other information? (https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/?p=38493).
So, if Windows guessed the size wrong, UCheck size will also be off.
Another approach, would be to probe each download links and check the returned Content-Length (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/Content-Length) HTTP entity header to get the size of the installer itself. Unfortunately, some servers don't return this header, so it's not an efficient solution.
We will probably change the way UCheck retrieves the sizes in the future but it will require extensive refactoring, so it will take time.
Have a nice day.

Thanks, Curzon, for the explanation. Not a huge problem for sure, just a bit misleading. Perhaps you might consider just removing the download size information in the interim ... ?
Have a great day.

Hi Phil,
You are very welcome.
I just asked Tigzy and he said he wants the sizes to be consistent with the ones displayed in the Add/Remove Programs control panel, so it's very unlikely they will be removed.
Have a nice day, too.

Curzon:
There is definitely something wrong here, in light of Tigzy's statement about taking the installer file size from Add/Remove Programs.
UCheck is telling me that the download was 340 KB (see the screen snip in my original post), but my "Add/Remove Programs" size listing is 340 MB.
Thank you and have a great day.

Hi Phil,
You are very welcome.
UCheck V3.5.1 was released today and the bug should now be fixed. Could you please give it a try ?
Have a nice day, too.

Curzon:
Thank you for your reply. I just did a UCheck scan, but no programs needed updating, so I will report back when next Calibre needs to be updated.
Have a great weekend.
